Lookman fires Atalanta to victory, Second on Serie A Table

Atalanta maintained their impressive start to their Serie A campaign, thanks to a hard fought win over Fiorentina in Bergamo on Sunday evening.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men secured a 1-0 win, with the goal coming off the boot of their Nigerian import Ademola Lookman.

With Napoli sitting on top of the table following their convincing win over Torino, Atalanta needed three points against the Violas to maintain the pace behind the Serie A leaders.

The game was closely contested and both sides wasted good chances to break the deadlock.

Atalanta finally found a way through in the 59th minute, when Muriel gathered a throw-in with his back to goal, turned to squirm between Venuti and Martinez-Quarta at the by-line and pull it back for Lookman to tap home from six yards.

It was Lookman’s second goal of the season for Atalanta since joining from RB Leipzig.

The Nigerian almost set up the second for his side later, when he laid a good pass to Ederson who should’ve done better by hitting the target.

Ademola Lookman himself came close to grabbing his second of the game few minutes later, but Martinez-Quarta recover quickly to make a decisive block.

Atalanta held on for the victory which keeps them neck and neck with Napoli at the top of the table.
