Onyeka Brentford will Survive AFCON Exodus

Brentford’s Nigerian midfielder, Frank Onyeka has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to manage the potential absence of African players during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Onyeka, an important player for Brentford, is among the potential absentees set to depart for the AFCON, commencing on January 13.

The Nigerian, and Yoane Wissa (DR Congo), who have played pivotal roles for the club are expected to leave for National team duty in coming days.

As the Premier League braces itself for the impact of these absences, Onyeka remains optimistic about Brentford’s resilience during this period.

“It’s not going to be easy. But I know the team – they are strong,” the 25-year-old told BBC Sport Africa.

“When someone leaves, another person is there to take their place.”

Frank Onyeka is expected to be included in Nigeria’s Super Eagles final squad for the tournament.

“I’ll always want to represent my country on the big stage. It’s an honour to wear the green and white shirt, so it’s something that I have to do,” he told BBC Sport Africa.

“I was a boy playing in the streets of Nigeria and now I’m representing the Super Eagles at AFCON.

“It is a dream come true, because after watching Afcon legends in past years, now you’re going to be part of the team. I’m looking forward to it so much.”

The combative midfielder was a member of Nigeria’s squad to the last AFCON edition in Cameroon, making his debut against Guinea Bissau.
