PSG Snub Antonio Conte, Owner Prefers Tuchel as Emery’s Replacement

Thomas Tuchel will become the new manager of Paris Saint-Germain from next season with Unai Emery set to depart after failing to bring European success to the club, according to reports.

The German manager has enjoyed a year on sabbatical following an acrimonious exit from Borussia Dortmund last May, but will return to the dugout and attempt to bring an elusive Champions League title to the French capital.

ESPN, who broke the story, claim Tuchel was well down the wishlist of PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi with Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique all considered stronger candidates.

At the same time, sporting director Antero Henrique was pushing for either Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca or Monaco’s Leonardo Jardim before Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is the club’s outright owner, opted for Tuchel.

The same report claims Tuchel’s reputation as a tactical master and the intense style of play he instilled at Borussia Dortmund were winning factors. But his innovation will mean little if he cannot do what his predecessors have failed to: win the Champions League.
