Rivers United on the brink of exit from CAFCL after home draw against Al Hilal

Nigeria Professional Football League side Rivers United played a 1-1 draw with Al Hilal of Sudan in their CAF Champions second round leg encounter on Sunday.

The game was played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt and it was the Sudanese who walked away with a massive advantage ahead of the second leg.

Rivers United dominated possessions and were unlucky not to take the after 21 minutes of play.

The Stanley Eguma’s side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, but Konan Ruffin saw his effort ricochet against the crossbar.

Rivers United continued to press forward in search for the opener, but poor defending at the end allowed the visitors go in front with their first meaning attack in the game.

Yasil Mohamed scored for Al Hilal after a perfect counter attack that caught Rivers United defended napping.

The visitors went into half break in front, but they were pegged back 28 minutes after the restart when Mohamed Saeed scored an own goal.

Both side failed to find the winner as the referee brought the first leg to a close.

The result means Rivers United needs nothing but victory in the second half to be guaranteed a place in the money spinning group phase.

The team will now travel to Sudan for the second leg slated for Sunday 24th of October 2021.
