Rivers United’s Onoja unbothered by ‘hostile’ Wydad fans in CAF CL return leg

Rivers United’s Joseph Onoja believes their tie against Wydad Casablanca is very much open and the players will fight for positive result in the second leg.

Over the weekend Rivers United beat Wydad 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League, final preliminary round of African Champions League.

The title holders took the lead in the first half when Bouly Sambou vandalized Rivers United’s attack inside opening two minutes.

Malachi Ohawume replied with the equalizer for the hosts, before Paul Acquah scored the 53rd-minute for the Nigerian side.

Onoja, 23, hailed the team’s ability to fight back after the early minutes setback, but warned that the clash is far from over.

“We bounced back from a debatable goal to win at home and we know what awaits us from their fans and the antics in Morocco,” the midfielder told BBC Sport Africa.

“One thing I am sure of is that Wydad fans won’t come on the pitch to play. It’s us against the players and as defending champions, they will be under pressure.

“The most important thing for us is to walk away from the Mohammed V Stadium with a group-stage ticket.”

Rivers United will travel to Casablanca for the return leg next week and the winner will advance to the lucrative Group Phase, while the losers will drop to the CAF Confederations Cup.
