United striker Ighalo drums for support for Super Eagles

Manchester United forward Odion Ighalo has admitted that he is still in contact with Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr and the team, despite his retirement from the team.

Ighalo retired from the National team assignment in 2019 after playing 35 times for the Super Eagles and scored 16 goals.

Following his loan transfer to Manchester United from Shanghai Shenhua back in January, Ighalo has been in fine form, hitting four goals in eight appearances for the club.

His form however sparked reactions back home with many fans calling for his return to the three-time African champions.

Ighalo has now disclosed to www.brila.net that he’s still in close contact with Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr who told him the door he still wide open for him, should he want to return.

“I am still in contact with the National team coach, Gernot Rohr, he sent me a congratulatory message after the extension, told me the door was still open and that he knows I have a lot to offer the team, help groom the young lads and all that. The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick also contacted me but I’m still thinking about it. But for now, I want to enjoy my club football, you know.” He told www.brila.net.

Before his departure from the National team, Ighalo helped Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2019 African cup of Nations in Egypt, he also departed with top scorer award at the tournament with five goals.

However, Ighalo believes the Super Eagles is still blessed with great players and all they need is supports from soccer-loving Nigerians.

“I just want these young guys to keep making good plays, enjoy themselves, the Osihmens, Iwobis, Chukwuezes. We have good players, they just need to be encouraged so they can elevate their levels” he concluded.
