Former Dutch international Raphael Van Der Vaart has revealed that he advised current Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong to pledge his international future to Dutch.
Ekong who opted to represent Nigeria ahead of Netherlands and Norway knew Van Der Vaart during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.
Van Der Vaart is however adamant that Ekong has improved a lot since their time at Spurs and stated he has what it takes to become regular in the Dutch setup.
”Ekong has improved but still needs to work hard in some areas. A decent player who could have been part of the Dutch team but he wasn’t patient and played for Nigeria instead.
“You can’t fault his decision because he has played at some major tournaments with Nigeria “, Van Der Vaart concluded.
Ekong has represented Nigerian at major championships like the Olympic games in 2016, the 2018 FIFA senior world cup in Russia and the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
