Venezia fires Zanetti… Interim Coach named

Venezia have fired Coach Paolo Zanetti following the team’s poor run in the Italian Serie A.

Zanetti’s sack was confirmed on Wednesday and the Club announced Primavera team boss Andrea Soncin as his immediate replacement.

The Lagunari gained promotion to the Serie A this season, but they have struggled to find their footing in the top flight.

Currently rock bottom of the table with just five games left to play, Venezia are on an eight-game losing streak, their last Serie A victory was on February 12 against Torino.

The statement confirming the sack reads:

Venezia FC announce that Paolo Zanetti has been relieved of his duties as First Team manager.

The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for their professionalism and their contribution to Venezia’s historic promotion to Serie A last season.

As we have said in recent days, we all share credit for the successes of last season, and we must all take accountability for the failures of this season.

Meanwhile, Paolo Zanetti’s dismal could be a massive blow to Nigerian duo David Okereke and Tyrone Ebuehi who are hoping to get a permanent deal at the club.

The Italian manager signed them on season-long loan deals with the option to make the deals permanent at the end of the season, but with a new manager coming in things could go a different turn.

While Ebuehi struggled with reoccurring injuries, Okereke has enjoyed a good run of games under Zanetti and scored six goals in the league.
