Late on Tuesday evening, Dortmund’s chief of police Gregor Lange and public prosecutor Sandra Lücke announced the first findings regarding the bomb attack on the BVB Team Bus.
However, the pair refrained from revealing concrete information – in part due to “tactical reasons relating to the investigation”. It remains unclear for now whether it was a terrorist attack. “We do not know about the background to the attack,” Lange said.
Dortmund’s chief of police instead described it as a “targeted attack on the BVB Team Bus” and continued: “At 19:15 CET, there were three explosions in the vicinity of the hotel in which the BVB team had been guests and were leaving to travel to the stadium.”
Public prosecutor Lücke reported the “discovery of a letter”, which is being “checked in detail for authenticity”.
Protective measures have been initiated for the players of both teams.
“The stadium and the surrounding area remain the focal point for police,” assured Lange, who then spoke about Wednesday’s rescheduled fixture:
“We’re preparing a major police presence for tomorrow and will do everything humanly possible to ensure the match can take place safely.” (br).
