Even Harry Potter couldn’t simply wish away his troubles, he devised plans, studied spells and potions and the likes.

Meanwhile, the “muggles” who ran the Athletics Federation of Nigeria simply wanted to wish away their problems according to former Nigerian Athlete, Deji Aliu.

Aliu, who won gold in the 100m at the 2003 African Games, said the problems crippling Nigeria Athletics has a long history dating back almost two decades.

The former African champion stated in an interview with www.brila.net that, “the problems we have now did not start today. They started as far back as 1998 or 1999. Everybody stood idly by and watched things degenerate till it became this big.”

“The watch things go back and hoped they could simply wish it away by doing nothing.”

He blamed the leadership of the AFN at the time for failing to take practical and decisive steps to deal with the issues.

Aliu has however, ruled himself out of the race for a seat on the board in the forthcoming election.

The 41-year-old insists he’ll contribute to the development of Athletics outside the politics but hopes the former Athletes aspiring for various positions on the AFN board will bring their wealth of experience to bear.
