Striker Chuba Akpom has attributed his record breaking campaign to manager Michael Carrick.

Akpom enjoyed a productive campaign for Middlesbrough, netting 28 goals; his best return since he turned professional.

The 27-year-old capped his performance with both the Championship and Middlesbrough player of the season in the process.

“Carrick spoke to me straight away,” he told Daily mail on his remarkable season.

“In his second session, he put me in that new role. I’m so grateful he did that — it’s got the best out of me.

“Michael is a top man. The gaffer is so humble. He would say he’s had nothing to do with my form, but I want to tell people he has been key.”

“I can’t praise him enough for what he’s done for my career.

“My biggest strength is my mentality. I never once doubted myself — work hard and it’ll work out.”

Akpom is aiming to lead Middlesbrough back in the Premier League next season.

The Michael Carrick’s side will take on Coventry City in the playoff semi-final second leg later today, in a winner takes all affair.

The first leg at the Riverside ended without a goal, and the winner will face Luton Town in the final.
