At 33! Daniel Akpeyi says he is not ready to retire from Eagles

Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper at the 2019 African Cup of Nations Daniel Akpeyi has reaffirmed his commitment to the National team despite calls from fans for his immediate retirement.

Akpeyi, 32, spoke exclusively to Brila.net’s Tony Bekederemo through Brila FM on Wednesday afternoon that he is not planning to retire anytime soon.

The Kaizer Chief goalkeeper accepted the blame for Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick goal that dashed the hope of Super Eagles in the last minute of their AFCON semifinal clash with Algeria.

During the interview with brila.net, Akpeyi said he has not achieved any big thing with the National team and as such, he is going to make himself available for the Coach’s selection.

Asked whether he plans to follow the likes of Captain Mikel Obi and Jude Ighalo to retirement, Akpeyi said Mikel has won everything in football, and he is not in any way compared to the former Chelsea midfielder.

“Mikel has won everything, except maybe the World Cup”, He said.

“Mikel leaving the team at this time is a very good thing for him and his career, he has had an amazing career, and he left respectfully”, the player added.

The goalkeeper also used the medium to wish everyone who has retired or planning to retire Goodluck in their future endeavors.
