Bassey eager to follow the footsteps of Balogun and Aribo in the Super Eagles

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has explained the influence of Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo had on his decision to choose Nigeria.

Bassey says he wants to represent Nigeria at every major tournament and also help the team.

Bassey was born in Italy to Nigerian parents and grew up in England—where he started his football career.

The young defender is eligible to represent England and Italy. However, the youngster opted to represent Nigeria at the senior international level.

He earned his first call up to the Super Eagles in 2021 against the Central African Republic but wasn’t unable to make his debut.

However, he’s now back in the squad for the World Cup qualification playoff against Ghana and will be hoping to make his bow for the three-time African Champions.

Chatting with www.brila.net from Super Eagles camp in Abuja, the players said he’s delighted to be back and revealed he wants to follow the footsteps of his Rangers teammates and play for Nigeria at major tournaments.

“Joe and Leon have been there with me, I’ve played with them for months now and they told me about their experience with the National team.”

“For example, Joe is just coming off from African Cup of Nations and Leon has experienced it before, so these are the things I want to experience as well and also help the team whichever way I can.

“So I’m delighted to be here and ready to work hard for the team .” He told Brila.net.
