Craig Shakespeare prays Iheanacho, Vardy Partnership clicks

Craig Shakespeare believes Leicester have pulled off a transfer coup by signing Kelechi Iheanacho and insists the 20-year-old can form a productive partnership with Jamie Vardy.

Iheanacho has recovered from a toe injury to be in contention for the Premier League’s curtain-raiser at Arsenal on Friday night and Shakespeare has been impressed in training.

Leicester paid Manchester City £25million for a centre-forward with the best minutes per goal ratio of any Premier League player with more than 10 strikes, and Shakespeare hopes he replicates that form at the King Power Stadium.

Initial signs were promising as Iheanacho set up Vardy for the winning goal in the final pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach last Friday.

‘What I have seen so far I am really impressed with,’ Shakespeare said. ‘I don’t want to put too much pressure on him because he is a young lad, but I like his character. Just as importantly his quality of play has been there for all to see.

‘Hopefully in 12 months we will be sitting here and he has got a hatful of goals and he has been a team player.

‘Kelechi can play with Jamie, as we saw in his cameo last Friday night. But I think he is versatile to play in different positions.

‘He has done that at Man City. We have got strength in depth in forward positions.’

Iheanacho will fight for a start at the Emirates with Shinji Okazaki, Islam Slimani and Leonardo Ulloa.
