Ex England and Arsenal star explains Awoniyi’s importance to Nottingham Forest

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson praised Taiwo Awoniyi for his outstanding performance against Chelsea on Saturday.

Awoniyi continues his scoring streak with a brace for Nottingham Forest at Chelsea on Saturday.
The Nigerian forward now has four goals in his last two games since returning from a four-month injury layoff, becoming the first Forest player to score back-to-back doubles since 1995.
The last man to do that was Bryan Roy, who scored twice in three games running and the 25-year-old could recreate such a run against title-chasing Arsenal next Saturday.
Speaking from his role as match day pundit on Sky Sports, Merson says, Awoniyi has hit form at the right time and he’s crucial to Forest’s hope of surviving relegation.
“Awoniyi, who scored the two goals, was a threat. He held the ball up well. I saw him the other week playing away from home and he was taken off, he didn’t do well. Now he looks a handful, he’s holding it up and playing it simple and scoring two goals. They were simple.
“With him playing like that with a couple of games left, I’d be quite shocked if Forest went down from here. To come back with that away record is very, very good.
“I think it’s going to be hard for the others to catch them. Leicester are virtually going to have to win two out of their three games. It’s a hard one. That point was huge for Forest. They need four out of their last six points. He said.
