Feyenoord hero Dessers celebrates win, makes second-leg assurance against Marseille

Cyriel Dessers believes Feyenoord played a great game against Olympique Marseille in the UEFA Europa Conference League first leg.

Dessers took his goal tally to ten this season in the Competition, when he scored twice in the 3-2 win over Marseille on Thursday.

The forward made the breakthrough in the 18th minute, finishing low past Steve Mandanda after Luis Sinisterra played the ball into his path.

The Colombian made it 2-0 for Feyenoord within three minutes, after his effort was deflected to the back of the net by Valentin Rongier.

Dieng brought Marseille back into game in the 28th minute, before Gerson pounced on loose ball to level.

Dessers turned the game around and scored Feyenoord’s third, immediately after the restart. The on-loan Genk forward profitted from a defensive blunder to seal the win.

Feyenoord are now unbeaten in 11 UEFA Conference League matches (group stage to final) with a record of 8 wins and 3 draw.

Also, the Dutch side have won eight and drawn one of their nine European home games this season; they have lost only two of their last 16 in all competitions (W12 D2 L2).

Speaking to the media, Dessers said they will surely travel to France next week with plenty of confidence.

“There’s a high risk factor in the way we play, yet also brings a lot of rewards. We can make things very difficult for Marseille,” said the Feyenoord forward,

“But they’re a very good team. You see that with guys like Payet. They weren’t in top form this evening, but they can still make something happen in a flash.”

Dessers tops the competition’s goalscorers rankings after taking his tally to ten for the season, two more than his nearest rival, AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham.
