Imama Amapakabo downplays Nigerian football decline in 2019

Coach Imama Amapakabo has surprisingly described 2019 as ‘a blessed year for him’ despite failing to make an appreciable impact with three different national teams in the year under review.

The Super Eagles assistant head coach saw his local national side knocked out by Togo’s Sparrow Hawks from the WAFU Cup of Nations in Senegal, before going down to same opponents, over two legs in the race to qualify for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN), all in less than a month.

Things seemed to get worse for the former Rangers coach when under his tutelage, the Olympic Eagles failed to defend their title at the 3rd U23 AFCON in Egypt last month, suffering an early exit from the tournament and ultimately missing out of the football event of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

In a chat with www.brila.net, the former Sharks and Kano Pillars goalkeeper said he considers it a privilege to have coached the national teams and downplayed the disappointing outcomes he oversaw.

“(2019) is a blessed year for me; Imama Amapakabo. I had the opportunity that many other persons have never had: assistant coach of Super Eagles, head coach of CHAN, head coach of the Under23 team,” he said.
“Whatever the results are, all glory to God. I think it’s a blessed year for me.”

Asked whether he felt disappointed with the poor results of his teams in those tournaments, the former El Kanemi Warriors coach said: “I am not (disappointed). I am a coach, and I try to do my best at all times to try to get results as much as I possibly can.

“Like I say all the time, I’m like a gravedigger – the day I win games I dig four shovels, the day I lose games I dig 200.”
