Louis van Gaal says Netherlands lacked quality of Finidi George

Louis van Gaal said his Dutch side lacked the quality of former Nigerian winger Finidi George and former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars.

van Gaal’s side crashed out of the FIFA World Cup to Argentina on penalties in Lusail on Friday.

Netherlands came back from two goals down in the quarter-final to force the game into shootouts, but believes his team would have done better with wing players.

“That’s why we haven’t lost in the 20 games we started together last summer, that’s for nothing.

“Only we don’t have the right and left strikers as I had at Ajax; no Overmars, no Finidi George.

“If we play with wingers it can only be done in plan B or C, but setting up two long strikers and pumping the ball into the 16-meters as quickly as possible, you won’t always do that, you don’t want to play opportunistically all the time,” He said while speaking to the media on their ouster.

Louis van Gaal managed Finidi George during their time with Ajax Amsterdam, with the pair winning the Dutch league and Champions League in 1995.

Netherlands have since announced that the 71 year-old Coach stepped down from his role.
