Rohr happy with Super Eagles’ slim victory over Benin Republic

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr says he’s pleased with his side’s 2-1 victory over the Squirrels of Republic of Benin in Wednesday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game.

The three time African Champions battled back from a goal down to secured 2-1 win over their tiny neighbours at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

Stephane Sessegnon put the Squirrels ahead after just two minutes into the match before the Super Eagles rallied back with goals from Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu.

Rohr however was pleased with the players response after going a goal down to claim all three points.

“Benin Republic are good team, we knew what they did in the Afcon but our attitude was good,” Rohr said in a press conference.

“I’m happy with the result, to come back and win. Good to see competitions among the players.”

The former Gabonese head coach àlso praised the hospitality received by the three-time African champions in the capital of Akwa Ibom.

“We are good everywhere in Nigeria, we had good hospitality in Asaba. But it feels good to be back in Uyo,” he added.

Super Eagles are currently leading Group L with three points from one game after Lesotho and Sierra Leone played out a 1-1 draw at the Siaka Stevens Stadium.

Nigeria will look to extend their lead in the group when they travel to Setsoto Stadium for the second game with Lesotho’s Crocodiles on Sunday.
