Akure fans showed the ugly side of football for the umpteen time on Sunday after match officials of Sunshine vs Kano Pillars NPFL game were attacked after the game ended goalless.
Akure has built a notorious reputation over the past seasons as a result of crowd trouble and assault on Match officials.
After the game, Sports Commissioner of the State, Saka Ogunleye played down on the incident but assured that the club will open an investigation.
“I’m satisfied with the performance of the match officials, they showed professionalism and which is expected of other referees in the elite league,” Ogunleye told reporters after the game.
“I’m not sure there was an incident of such, but I’ve directed security operatives to investigate and I can assure you if the security agents discover such happened , those miscreants will be charged to court.”
Referee Damien Akure and his assistants had missiles hauled at them as they exited the Akure Stadium after the game – not on the pitch as reported – according to the club’s media officer.
