Taiwo Awoniyi and Union Berlin goes to winter break with a win

Taiwo Awoniyi was in action for Union Berlin as they recorded a narrow win at Bochum in Saturday’s Germany Bundesliga game.

The striker started the match, but failed to register his 10th league of the season for the Urs Fischer’s tutored team.

The 24-year-old striker lasted for 64 minutes, before being replaced by Kevin Behrens.

Awoniyi has now failed to score a goal in his last three Bundesliga match for Union Berlin — with his last coming in the Derby win at Hertha.

Despite the mini drought, Awoniyi still leads the way for Union this season with nine goals, behind only Robert Lewandowski (19), Patrik Schick (16), Erling Haaland (13) and Anthony Modeste (10) overall.

Meanwhile, Max Kruse scored the decisive goal for the visitors in the 14 minute and It was the first time this season Union’s number 10 scored from open play in the Bundesliga, his previous two top-flight goals having come from the penalty spot.

The result brought an end to the capital side’s second successive league  game without a win and it was a massive boost for them going into the winter break.

Union Berlin moved to 6th on the table, with 27 points from 17 games. They are trailing fourth place Hoffenheim with a since point.
