Waldrum Commends Super Falcons’ but Rues Missed Opportunities

Following Nigeria’s 1-0 win over South Africa in the first leg of their 2024 Olympic Games qualifier on Friday, Head coach Randy Waldrum praised his team’s performance but expressed belief that they could have achieved more.

Rasheedat Ajibade’s first-half penalty proved to be the decisive moment, securing the win for Nigeria.

Despite dominating proceedings, the Super Falcons missed several opportunities to extend their lead, with Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Kaylin Swart denying them on multiple occasions.

Reflecting on the match, Waldrum acknowledged his team’s improvement from previous games, but lamented their inability to capitalize on scoring chances.

“We played better and stronger. We were unfortunate not to get two, three goals,” he remarked in his post-match assessment.

Ashleigh Plumptre and Tosin Demehin missed the game due to injury, while star player Asisat Oshoala remained on the bench throughout the game.

Despite missing key players, the Super Falcons were discipline in maintaining their defensive shape throughout the match.

“I think the defence stood strong even with new players,” He said.

The coach also had words of praise for Chinwendu Ihezuo, who won the crucial penalty that ultimately secured the victory.

“(Chinwendu) Ihezuo was fantastic, she was the player of the match even if she didn’t score, her hold-up play was great, she has been playing well in Mexico this season, I think they were not prepared for her.”
