NFF to meet over Finidi’s contract details

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has announced that additional information will be provided on the contract of Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach.

Finidi,52, was appointed on a long term basis as Super Eagles head coach following the FA’s announcement on Tuesday.

The position had been vacant since the departure of Jose Peseiro, who guided the team to the final of the 2023 AFCON.

Finidi previously served as one of Jose Peseiro’s assistants for 20 months and also acted as the interim coach, managing the games against Ghana and Mali.

While the federation has not disclosed the specifics of his contract, according to NFF Media Director Ademola Olajire, “Everything will be revealed once the details are finalized.”

It is expected that Finidi will be tasked with leading Nigeria to both the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup coming in 2025 and 2026 respectively.

Godwin Bamigboye, Chairman of the FCT Football Coaches Association, however, cautioned the NFF against interfering with Finidi George’s decisions, stressing that he deserves respect and autonomy.

“He should be allowed to make his own decisions and deserves respect from all. The respect and privileges accorded to a foreign coach should be extended to him,’’ he said.

Bamigboye also called on George to bring back ‘the glory days’ of the Super Eagles.

“I will encourage him to go back to that attacking style of play that the team was known for.”

Currently, the Super Eagles occupy third place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa.

Only the group winner will secure an automatic spot to the tournament.
