Akpom nets 27th goal of the season for Middlesbrough

Chuba Akpom scored again as Middlesbrough produced one of season’s best attacking display, mauling Norwich 5-1 at the Riverside on Friday night.

Middlesbrough overpowered Norwich City with a clinical display to keep their faint hopes of automatic promotion alive.

The Championship leading scorer stuck what happened to be the last goal of the game in the 49th minute.

Chuba Akpom scored immediately after the break, latching onto a pass from Cameron Archer who also added two goals on the night.

Akpom, Championship player of the season nominee, now has 27 goals for the promotion chasing Middlesbrough.

The win moved Boro within five points of second-placed Sheffield United with four matches remaining, but having played two games more.

Speaking after the game, Michael Carrick hailed Akpom and his teammates for a perfect job done.

“It’s a great result. The goals going in were clinical and it was a ruthless performance more than anything. Football-wise we haven’t played any worse than that but we haven’t won in recent weeks.

“We looked dangerous in spells which was great to see. The boys took confidence from the fact we hadn’t had a result but the performances have been there.

“I thought we got the balance right, we defended generally pretty well and we looked good at the other end.”

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough’s hope of a automatic Premier League return now seems uncertain, but they have a chance through the play-offs.
