Acute Leukaemia retires Carl Ikeme from football

Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme will never get to wear the national colours in a competitive match after being diagnosed with with acute leukaemia.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers of England goalie, 31, will begin chemotherapy after he  returned “abnormal blood tests” during pre-season testing and further checks confirmed the diagnosis.
Carl has played for Wolves for his entire career from 2003 and had loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Stockporr County, Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Doncaster Rovers.
Although Ikeme was eligible to represent England at international level, he chose Nigeria, and was first called up to the Super Eagles squad in 2007.
He made his international debut for Nigeria on 5 September 2015 against Tanzania in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification game.
