France International Laurent Koscielny has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles in Arsenal’s Europa League semi-final defeat against Atletico Madrid.

Koscielny was stretchered off after just 12 minutes of Arsenal’s clash with Atletico Madrid.

The 32-year-old Frenchman lost his footing while moving towards Atletico forward Diego Costa off the ball and was in obvious distress as he clutched his lower leg.

Arsenal officials instantly recognised that Koscielny would play no further part in the game, and prepared Calum Chambers for an early first substitution.

Arsene Wenger revealed after the game that he was fearing the worst for his captain with the World Cup on the horizon.

“It’s not good,” Wenger said.

“It looks (like) an Achilles rupture.

Maybe we’ll have good news but the first signs are not very good.”

France kicks off their World Cup against Australia on June 16 but Laurent with a total 51 caps will be missing from their defence.
