Awoniyi fires blank as Nottingham Forest bow to Liverpool at Anfield

Taiwo Awoniyi was on parade for Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s Premier League 3-2 defeat to his former Club, Liverpool, at Anfield.

Awoniyi, recall, was on the books of Liverpool for six years without making a single appearance for the Reds.

The forward spent most of time there on loan before joining Union Berlin, and then Nottingham Forest.

He scored the winner in a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture, but in Saturday’s game, it was a busy afternoon for the Nigerian forward who led the line for Steve Cooper’s side as he battled Liverpool’s defense marshalled by Vigil Van Dijk and Ibrahim Konate.

Awoniyi failed to get a goal, but in deed gave the duo a good run for their money, firing three shots at goal, and winning two aerial duels.

The 25-year-old was substituted in the 83rd minute of the encounter.

Awoniyi has now made 21 appearances for Forest, netting 4 times.

Meanwhile, following the defeat Steve Cooper’s men remain in the relegation zone.

Forest have now collected three points from 11 games since their last victory, which was against Leeds United in February.
