Chiefs 3-2 Pirates: Another Soweto Derby Win for Daniel Akpeyi

A dramatic 3-2 win for Kaizer Chiefs over city rivals Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium sees the former extend their lead at the top of the PSL table.

Chiefs, who had Daniel Akpeyi between the sticks after the Nigerian was rested for the midweek game against Chippa United, have now picked up two Soweto Derby wins in 7 days.

The victory also means Amakhosi go 10 points clear of second placed Mamelodi Sundowns and eight places ahead of Pirates.

Saturday’s Derby was a five-goal thriller that served up all the intrigues including an own-goal, penalty and a late winner.

The goals rain started early with a Ntsikelelo Nyauza Own goal inside the opening minute of the game, to hand the hosts the lead.

Leonardo Castro double for Amakhosi 27 minutes later, but the visitors responded before the break.

Maliele Pule halved the deficit (39′) as Chiefs went into the break with their noses in front.

The game resumed but they’ll be no more goals until the hour mark Upon resumption as The Bucs leveled through Gabadinho Mhango.

However, there was to be a late drama and it was in favor of the hosts who were awarded a penalty with six minutes to go.

Daniel Cardoso stepped up and tucked it away to restore Chiefs’ lead and leaving Thulani Mokwena’s men hard done by.

But there was still left to play as the Fourth official showed 8 minutes on the board.

The sides kept going at it, but the Goalkeepers will not let any more goals in; Akpeyi getting booked for time wasting.

Ernst Middendorp’s men have now won six games in a row – the last time they dropped points was in September at home to Polokwane City.
