Eguavoen makes Gernot Rohr Admittance

Austin Eguavoen has admitted the sacking of Gernot Rohr may have contributed to the failure of the Super Eagles at the last Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Eguavoen who is the Technical Director of the NFF stated he warned the Federation about the timing of the sack, but they didn’t pay attention.

Rohr was sacked in November 2021 — two months before the AFCON in Cameroon and three months to the final World Cup qualifying playoff.

The NFF then turned to Eguavoen, who was Technical Director of the National teams, and He was handed the Eagles job as interim Coach.

Despite a good start in his new role, the tide quickly turned and Nigeria was knocked out from the AFCON in the R16 and also fell short of picking a ticket to the World Cup.

Speaking on Monday Night football on SuperSports, Eguavoen defended his stewardship and attributed the likely difficult transition to the very swift changes in the Eagles.

“Eguavoen was not in support of the decision to sack Rohr,” the former Coach spoke in third person.

“Yes, I complained about the timing as it was too close to the Africa cup of nations.”

Eguavoen and the entire technical crew have since been dismissed by the Nigeria Football Federation and uncertainty is still hanging over his role as the technical director.

The NFF have announced that the search for a new coaching crew is on, but they aren’t in a haste to make an appointment.
