Nigeria’s medal hopes at the IAAF World Relays was dashed on Sunday when the 4×200 metres Men team were disqualified in the final.
The quartet of Emmanuel Arowolo, Enoch Adegoke, Usheoritse Itsekiri and Jerry Jakpa had finished fourth in Heat 2 and advanced to the final as fifth overall.
However, despite setting a National Record of 1:22.08 in the Heat, the sprinters’ joy was smashed for a technicality.
In the race itself, the USA team won, holding off a strong South African squad, anchored by African 100m champion Akani Simbine, who clocked 1:20.12. That broke the African record for the second time in less than two hours.
Germany was third in 1:21.26, another national record.
It’s the second time the Country’s team was disqualified in Yokohama, following the Women’s 4x100m team’s red flag in the Heats.
