How Charles Atshimene’s late penalty earn Akwa United massive win over Enyimba

Akwa United opened a five points lead at top of the Nigerian professional football league table after beating rivals Enyimba on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers kept their hope of winning the maiden league crown alive with a professional performance against the shaky visitors.

In a bid to avoid defeat, Enyimba boss Fatai Osho started the game with five defenders, three midfielders, and two wingers, while his two main strikers sat on the bench.

The tactical move by Osho limited Akwa United’s scoring opportunities and almost earned them points until Nelson Ogbonnaya gave away a penalty with few minutes left to play.

Akwa United top scorer, Charles Ashimene however stepped forward and converted the penalty in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, Enyimba’s gaffer Osho was shown a red card in the 71st minute by the referee, Nura Abdullahi for protesting against some of his decisions.

This is the second time in four days that the Enyimba coach would be sent to the dressing room for outbursts against match officials. He was sent off at halftime against Rivers United on Wednesday in Aba.

Enyimba are now fifth on the table with 52 points from 32 games, while Akwa United moved to 60 points from the same number of matches.
