Okoye under scrutiny following another error in Sparta Rotterdam’s loss

Maduka Okoye had a game to forget as his error cost Sparta Rotherdam a point against Ajax Amsterdam at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday.

Okoye was having a good game like he had impressed for several weeks, before his howler early second half against Ajax.

Joeri de Kamps gave Sparta Rotherham a surprise lead in the 33rd minute, but the home side levelled four minutes after the break through Davy Klaassen.

The Nigerian could have kept out Klaassen’s effort, but his reaction time was slow and it allowed the ball slip into the net.

League leaders Ajax Amsterdam completed the turn around when Dusan Tadic converted his penalty kick in the 62nd minute.

Despite the error, Okoye came off the pitch with four important saves to keep the scoreline respectful.

It was the first since February 27 that 22-year-old will conceded more than one goal in a match.

Prior to the game, Okoye had won multiple goalkeeper of the month awards and helped Sparta Rotterdam on a three-match unbeaten run in the league.

Sparta will face Fortuna Sittard in their next Eredivisie game on April 16 in a potential six-pointer game and the fans will be banking on Okoye for inspiration again.
