Super Falcons shouldering Africa’s hope at the FIFA Women’s World Cup

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is ongoing, and the performance of African teams has not been  totally impressive except the performance of the Nigerian women’s team.

As at the time of writing this article, only Nigeria’s Super Falcons have a chance of progressing into the knockout phase, with South Africa and Morocco on the brink of elimination, while Zambia bided the tournament goodbye already with a game to spare.

Brief x-ray of the performance of the Aftican teams

Super Falcons of Nigeria:

The Randy Waldrum’s team secured a victory against co-hosts Australia with a score of 3-2, making them the only African team with a win in the tournament so far.

Additionally, they sit on top of Group B with four points from two matches, needing just a point against already eliminated Republic of Ireland to confirm their place in the round of 16.

Bayana Bayana of South Africa:

They had a chance to secure Africa’s second victory but ended up in a 2-2 draw with Argentina, allowing a two goal lead to slip away. Despite this, it was their first point ever earned at the Women’s World Cup.

Shepolopolo of Zambia:

Unfortunately, they have been eliminated from the tournament after suffering consecutive heavy defeats, losing 5-0 to both Spain and Japan respectively.

The Shepolopolo will play for their first point against Costa Rica in the last game.

Atlas Lionesses of Morocco:

In their debut match, they faced a devastating 6-0 defeat at the hands of former Champions Germany.

Later on Sunday, Morocco’s team, the Atlas Lionesses, are scheduled to face Colombia in their second game. They will be aiming to secure Africa’s second victory in the tournament.
