Gernot Rohr’s Headache good for Nigerian Football

Gernot Rohr has brought back some sense of purpose to the Super Eagles since his appointment and it looks like he can do no wrong, but do more.

Rohr has made the business of wearing and playing for the Green and White both a thing of pride and duty.

Maybe it wasn’t all up to him, perhaps the NFF leadership deserves some praise to, but one thing is clear,  the national team is healthy and competitive.

The German’s scouting and managerial policy is not only commendable but also worth emulating for other national teams i.e the Super Falcons.

And while these steps will win him some praises,  his policy direction with the home based players is still a cause for concern.

For the advocates of “local content” the NPFL can surely do better than just Ikechukwu Ezenwa in every list of invited players to the Eagles.

The German’s scouting and managerial policy is not only commendable but also worth emulating for other national teams i.e the Super Falcons.

He’s not even second choice, the FC Ifeanyi Ubah goal tender when he’s in camp.

The others, who have also been extended that privilege in the past were neither given game time nor recalled.

So,  it begs the question if Rohr’s standards are just too high or he simply doesn’t fancy what “we produce here.”

Yet,  even those who have something against the snub cannot argue against the quality that seems to keep them out – even though some don’t get regular action at their clubs.

But,  how about those putting in the work in Europe – Israel, Belgium, Turkey, Austria – or  the MLS? Who’s looking out for them.

It goes without saying, that there are so many talents with Nigerian passports and those without, but of Nigerian origin, who deserve a look in.

The solution thus lies in hoping the players keep giving the Technical Adviser such selection headaches and the team stronger than ever to compete on all levels.

Additionally, when the time comes, transition from one generation to the next will hopefully be seamless and the much clamoured team B; of even equal strength in quality, will be established.
