Kelechi Iheanacho says he experienced mixed feelings after scoring the winner for Leicester City against his former employers Manchester City on Saturday.
Iheanacho robbed Nathan Ake of possession, before being fouled by the Dutch defender inside the penalty area.
The Nigerian international however dusted himself and dispatched the penalty kick to give Leicester City their first trophy of the 2021-2022 Season.
Speaking at the post-match conference, Iheanacho said: “I’ve got mixed emotions, I’m really grateful for getting the trophy today for my team. I’m really happy.”
Meanwhile, some Manchester City fans accused Iheanacho of making most of the contact from Ake to win the penalty and believe it should not have been given.
However, Iheanacho said he felt the decision to bring play back to award the penalty was correct.
He explained: “Yeah, I think it’s a penalty. He caught me, the referee saw it. He wanted us to play on so if we scored it would have been okay.
“I’ve been practicing penalties. I missed one last season so I’ve been practicing in pre-season. I had just one thing in my mind: just shoot at an angle and hit it hard, and that’s what I did.” He said.
Iheanacho will now turn his attention to Leicester’s Premier League season opener against Wolves at home on Saturday.
The former Manchester City man finished as Leicester City’s top scorer last season with 19 goals in all competitions.
