Rangers Boss Steven Gerrard has applauded Joe Aribo for the quality produced in the Midfielder’s goal as The Gers steamrolled past Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
Gerrard watched with slight disappointment as his side struggled to convert chances created in the first half at Fountain of Youth Stadium.
The 33 times champions were held 1-1 by the hosts and perhaps it was much to the delight of the home crowd among the 4,050 spectators in the bleachers.
But the second half was a different tale and the visitors wrote the most of that adventure, putting three goals past the opposition; Aribo with one of them.
Not known for his goalscoring prowess at the Scottish Club, Aribo has managed just two goals in the league, two in the League and Scottish Cups. He scored three more in the Europa League, but has made 39 appearances across all competitions this campaign.
He scored (68′), his first in two appearance in the Cup, to restore the lead before Alfredo Morelos (85′) and Scott Arfield (90+2′) completed the rout.
In his post-match reaction, Gerrard described his team heavy victory as “flattering”.
“I thought how we went about trying to create chances here was very good and very impressive. We put a lot of talent on the pitch so we expected that, though I was disappointed with us in the first half defensively in-terms of our organisation and our balance behind the ball which led to them getting a few chances and scoring against us.
“So that was the thing I had to address at half-time – I had to rattle a few cages at half-time and get them switched on and focused and in the right place defensively.
“Once we did that, we played some nice stuff and we went on to create a lot of chances and scored some really impressive goals.”
Speaking on the goals scored he said, “I was very, very impressed. The Joe Aribo goal was fantastic with Ryan Kent going on the outside and doing what he does with fantastic skill and an excellent assist, but that is still a tough finish so credit to Joe there.”
